Katariina Airas (born 1974, maiden name Simojoki)
Katariina Airas was born into a musical family of four children and she started singing already before she learned to speak. At four she was learning to play the piano, at five the violin and, later, the viola which she played for 12 years.
The most important musical experience came with the Tapiola choir where she was playing and singing between 1985-1994 with a growing confidence that her voice was the right instrument for her.
After the choir, she was taking private classes in classical singing under the instruction of, for example, Ritva-Liisa Korhonen.
She has never wanted to be labeled under any one style of singing and the folk music traditions as well as different popular music styles and vocal improvisations have always been a part of her repertoire.
She lives in Porvoo with her husband and three children.
